Camryn Manheim (born Debra Frances Manheim, March 8, 1961) is an American actress known for her roles as attorneyĀ Ellenor FruttĀ onĀ ABC'sĀ The Practice,Ā Delia BanksĀ onĀ CBS'sĀ Ghost Whisperer, Gladys Presley in the 2005 miniseriesĀ Elvis, and "Control" onĀ Person of Interest. In 1999, she won theĀ Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama SeriesĀ for her work onĀ The Practice, and she was awarded theĀ Women in FilmĀ Lucy Award. In 2005, she earnedĀ Golden Globe andĀ EmmyĀ nominations for her work in the miniseriesĀ Elvis. Her breakthrough was her one-woman show "Wake Up, I'm Fat", which playedĀ off-BroadwayĀ atĀ Classic Stage CompanyĀ in 1994.Ā She adapted the show into a book of the same name, which was published byĀ Broadway BooksĀ in 1999. She worked for a while as aĀ sign languageĀ interpreter at hospitals.Ā Her knowledge of sign language was used onĀ The Practice, in an episode ofĀ Law & Order, and in her role as a child behavioral psychologist in the movieĀ Mercury Rising. In 2015, Manheim was in the Deaf West production of the musicalĀ Spring AwakeningĀ as Adult Women. The production, which had a cast composed half of hearing actors and half of deaf or hard-of-hearing actors, paired every deaf actor (who signed their lines inĀ American Sign Language) with a hearing actor who said their lines verbally. Manheim voiced for deaf actressĀ Marlee MatlinĀ as well as signing her own dialogue in the parts of Frau Bergmann, FrƤulein GroĆebüstenhalter, and FrƤulein Knuppeldick. Her other television credits includeĀ Chicago Hope,Ā Ally McBeal,Ā Family Guy,Ā Will & Grace,Ā Boston Public,Ā Two and a Half Men,Ā The L Word,Ā How I Met Your Mother, and Hannah Montana. Since 2022, she has been part of the main cast ofĀ the revival ofĀ Law & Order. Her film credits includeĀ Romy and Michele's High School Reunion,Ā The Laramie Project,Ā Scary Movie 3,Ā Dark Water,Ā andĀ An Unfinished Life. In August 2019, she was elected secretary-treasurer of theĀ SAG-AFTRA union. Manheim was elected to the secretary-treasurer position. She did not run for reelection in 2021, and was succeeded byĀ Joely Fisher.
